PROKERA® is a biologic corneal bandage device used to aid in the treatment and healing of several different corneal conditions. How does PROKERA® work?

PROKERA® uses amniotic membrane tissue, which has natural therapeutic actions that help the damaged surface of the eye heal. This provides faster, more effective healing of the cornea with much less pain, scarring and inflammation. PROKERA® leads to clear corneas and improved clinical outcomes.

PROKERA® is made by adhering a piece of amniotic membrane tissue in between two rings made from a clear and flexible material. This tissue has natural therapeutic qualities that aid in ocular surface repair. While inserted into the eye, PROKERA® protects the eyes while also aiding in fast healing.

The PROKERA® Procedure

The PROKERA® device is inserted easily in office by Dr. Diamante. The PROKERA® device is rinsed with a sterile eye wash prior to insertion into the eye. Once sterilized, Dr. Diamante will apply a topical anesthesia to the eye to ensure no pain or discomfort during the short procedure. Your upper eyelid will be pulled up, and you will be asked to look down. The PROKERA® device is then inserted into the eye, upper eyelid first, then into the lower eyelid.

Once the eye is sufficiently healed, Dr. Diamante will remove the PROKERA® device. The healing of the cornea can be monitored even while the device is inserted, and healing time depends on the initial damage done to the eye.
